Differences between SSD drives and SATA

Data storage devices ensure the operation of the operating system and software on personal computers. There are several types of such devices - SSD, SAS, HDD - differing in manufacturing technology, speed, price, reliability and operating principle. Initially all PCs were based on hard disk drives, but due to the rapid development of technology, solid-state drives came into use not so long ago. Each type of hardware has its own advantages as well as drawbacks. Let's look at each type of drive.

SAS, SATA HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

A SATA drive is a unit in the form of a flat case with aluminum platters coated with a magnetic layer. Data is written or read as the magnetized surfaces rotate under a head positioned a few nanometers above them. An HDD produces noticeable noise caused by the rotation of moving parts at speeds of up to 7200 rpm. There is a subtype of HDD called SAS drives; they operate at speeds of 10 or 15 thousand rpm, offer a higher level of reliability, and provide good read and write performance (noticeably faster than SATA). A single HDD or SAS drive can store up to 8 TB of data. Here the information is retained even after the power supply is cut off. Today, in most cases, virtual VPS, personal computers, laptops and dedicated servers use regular SATA drives, due to their low price, long lifespan and large capacity.

SSD (Solid State Drive)

A solid-state drive, or SSD for short, has no moving parts in its design; it consists of a set of memory chips located on a board. SSD drives are silent in operation, consume significantly less power, and are smaller than HDD drives. Despite the performance advantage, SSDs have a drawback - they have a limited number of write cycles, which in turn gives rise to the opinion that they do not last long. However, we can assure you that modern drives from Intel, Samsung and Crucial have been substantially improved (compared to older versions) and fail extremely rarely. As proof of this, some manufacturers offer a 5-8 year warranty on their SSDs, and we hardly ever see problems with Solid State Drives!

Comparing SSD and HDD

  1. In terms of read and transfer speed, SSDs are much faster than other hard drives;
  2. The noise of a working HDD is clearly audible, while solid-state drives operate silently;
  3. SATA drives are quite heavy, unlike SSDs, which consist of lightweight chips;
  4. Measurements show that during peak loads hard drives consume up to 7 W, while Solid State Drives consume almost three times less;
  5. An SSD is insensitive to vibration, compared to hard drives, where an accidental knock can destroy the information stored on them;
  6. HDDs sometimes fail due to tiny scratches forming on the surface of the platters, but an SSD is not eternal either, as it is limited in the number of writes;
  7. On an SSD, data is written to memory sectors evenly, distributed by the built-in controller, while a full regular disk starts to work slowly, and to restore its optimal speed you need to run defragmentation, which reorders the location of the written sectors.
